British Engines’ fourth year apprentice, Corey Hogg, has been shortlisted for an award at tonight’s National Make UK Manufacturing Awards in London.
Corey began his British Engines apprenticeship in 2015, and has since been based at our Michell Bearings factory in South Shields.
During his four years with the company, Corey has demonstrated an excellent work ethic, clearly showing his desire to progress within the business whilst overcoming personal challenges. As a result, during the most recent British Engines Awards Evening, Corey received three out of the three apprenticeship awards that he was nominated to win.
Paul Taylor, Corey’s line manager and Michell Bearings’ Operations Manager, reveals: “From day one Corey’s enthusiasm and appetite to learn has marked him out as an outstanding apprentice. He has consistently achieved top marks in course work, received exemplary feedback from college tutors, and has excelled in our internal Apprenticeship+ programme.”
One of Corey’s most notable accomplishments to date occurred during his time working within the Production Engineering team. Corey explains: “During one of my regular appraisal meetings, I asked if I could be temporarily placed in the Production Engineering office. This was in order to obtain a better understanding of the department and its importance within the manufacturing process.
“Consequently, I was given the opportunity to be seconded there for six months. During this time I not only developed my own skills, but also wrote a training plan for other apprentices to follow in the future, as this will now be a regular placement for apprentices in their third year.”
The new training plan includes a number of training resources sourced by Corey. These resources will allow apprentices to grow a number of skill-based competencies and develop a wider overall understanding of how our business works. The competencies include: how to effectively use our business’ enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and our Edgecam software, as well as developing skills in data handling.
Paul praises Corey for the work that he has put into the training plan: “Corey has made a excellent impression on senior members of staff here at Michell Bearings. He has received a great deal of praise from the Production Engineering Manager and Engineering Director for his contributions to the business, the legacy he has created, and his academic achievements to date.”
Corey was interviewed by a panel of Make UK judges back in early December 2019, and the winner will be announced at tonight’s awards ceremony.
