As part of the British Engines Apprenticeship+ Scheme recruitment process the candidate must complete an aptitude test. Find out our top tips on how to prepare.

What is an aptitude test?

An aptitude test is a type of test used to assess a candidate’s capabilities during the recruitment process. The tests are produced in a variety of formats and are used to test areas such as problem solving and numerical.

How to revise for an aptitude test?

No aptitude test is the same and although you can’t revise for the tests in a typical way, there are ways to prepare.

Tips to prepare for an aptitude test:

  1. Practice online tests

Familiarising yourself in timed conditions will help you feel prepared when doing the real thing. The more practice you do, the easier it will be.

  1. Know when to move on

If you’re stuck on a question, move on to the next one. During your preparation, practice moving on and coming back to the question you are struggling on.

  1. Check what you can take in with you

Your examiner will advise what you can take into the test with you. A scientific calculator, pen and paper is essential. Also, a watch to help you keep an eye on the time may be beneficial.

  1. Stay calm

If you’ve prepared for the test you should feel confident. Try not to worry when completing the exam and take your time.

  1. Request feedback

If you’re not successful, ask for feedback from your assessor. Understanding where you went wrong may help you during future aptitude tests.
