10 Reasons to do an Engineering Apprenticeship at British Engines

At British Engines we believe that investing in our apprentices is an investment in the future of our business. We’ve listed ten reasons why we think you should choose to do your engineering apprenticeship with us.

1.You can earn and learn

As a British Engines apprentice you will receive a competitive weekly wage along with all the benefits of being a British Engines employee. This includes:

  • Wellbeing support
  • Holiday buy & sell
  • Competitive pay
  • Enhanced pension
  • Car scheme
  • Training & development

Being able to earn and learn at the same time means you can focus on achieving your qualification, relieving the pressure of balancing study and part-time jobs.

2. Apprenticeship+

In 2012, British Engines launched the Apprenticeship+ scheme, a programme designed to develop apprentices beyond the skills required on the national curriculum.  Apprenticeship+ develops specific skill sets and offers a much wide choice of career.

3. Gain a nationally recognised qualification

The British Engines Apprenticeship Scheme allows you to work to a structured training programme, using cutting edge technology, to gain a nationally recognised qualification including; NVQ levels 2 and 3, BTEC level 3 and the possibility of working towards an HNC.

4. Practical and relevant experience

An apprenticeship provides hands on experience gained in the work environment. The first 15 weeks of the apprenticeship are spent full time at college before going to work in one of our businesses, with one day a week at college.

5. Work for a global engineering group

The British Engines Group consists of eight engineering businesses, manufacturing a variety of products for a number of sectors such as; oil and gas, marine, construction and agriculture. Not only do we have facilities in the North East, but we also have facilities in 16 other countries worldwide.

6. Progress within the British Engines Group

British Engines’ apprentices are our future managers and directors of the company. When apprentices do well, we do well. We provide opportunities for further learning, qualifications and experiences that will help our apprentices excel.

7. Receive support and guidance

British Engines apprentices receive guidance and support from day one. The opportunity to work on the shop floor means that you become part of a team with the support of an experienced mentor to help you along the way. We provide team building days with apprentices from across the group, alongside regular reviews and progress meetings.

8. Broaden your skill set and knowledge

The skills and knowledge you gain on a British Engines apprenticeship exceed any national standards. You are given the opportunity to not only learn the industry, but the different customers, suppliers and products that we work with every day.

9. It’s free!

An apprenticeship is completely free. Meaning you gain a qualification and learn relevant practical skills, without racking up any student debt.

10. The opportunities are endless!

An apprenticeship is only the beginning. It can provide a solid practical foundation for any further education routes. Many of our apprentices have progressed to HNC, degree and masters level qualifications.

Did you know?

  • Studies have found that apprentices can earn up to £4,000 more in their first job compared to university graduates.
  • 15% of employers think that apprentices are more employable in comparison to other learning routes.

When it comes to choosing your next steps for further education, remember to choose a path that’s best for you. Make your decision based on how you like to learn and what you want to learn.
