Cell Manager

BEL Engineering, part of the British Engines Group, is a leading engineering service provider offering full process control of subcontract manufacturing services, with machining capabilities from 3mm diameter to 50 tonne components.

The company works primarily in the defence, nuclear, renewables and oil and gas sectors and operates from a secure, integrated manufacturing facility in Newcastle upon Tyne. BEL Engineering provides solutions which support customers from initial concept, through material selection and sourcing, to manufacturing, assembly and test.

The role

An exciting opportunity has arisen at our site at St. Peters, Newcastle upon Tyne for a Cell Manager to join our growing business. This position will be on a full time, permanent basis.

Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, the Cell Manager will provide effective supervision and leadership, and manage the day to day operations of the allocated machining cell(s).

Duties will include

  • To lead, motivate and develop the team to achieve business goals, ensuring all work standards are met, aligned with company policies and procedures
  • To effectively communicate and implement company policies, procedures and practices
  • To drive the safety, quality, cost, delivery, people (SQCDP) culture in operations
  • To implement and develop standard operating procedures (SOP)
  • To lead daily SQCDP cell meetings
  • To proactively manage absence and performance management issues, including disciplinary procedures
  • To ensure full compliance to all business standards (Health & Safety, Quality and site performance)
  • To ensure incidents/accidents are captured, reported and contained with corrective actions
  • To support the Operations Manager in delivering business objectives
  • To provide guidance and feedback to team members, clearly setting expectations
  • To identify poor performance and manage through performance improvement plans
  • To ensure that the team’s training and development needs are identified and met
  • To promptly contain faults and put corrective actions in place
  • To understand and drive overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) across the site
  • To ensure constructive handover is completed and captures all issues
  • To practice and maintain 5S standards
  • To carry out any other duties not listed above as may be reasonably expected
  • To ensure that you work in a safe manner and comply with the British Engines Group Health, Safety & Environmental Policy

The person

The successful candidate must hold an HNC or NVQ level 4 in engineering. An Apprenticeship certificate in a relevant engineering discipline is also preferred. IOSH or NEBOSH qualifications would be advantageous.

Applicants must have experience of working in a manufacturing environment in a management/supervisory role. They must have an understanding of 3 & 5 Axis CNC machines and their capabilities. Experience of working in a subcontract manufacturing environment and manufacturing components for various industries (aerospace, oil and gas, nuclear, defence) is desirable.

Excellent communication and people management skills are essential, as is the ability to thrive in a fast paced environment with a focus on improvement. They will have the ability to develop their team through coaching and training. They will demonstrate a positive, innovative and motivated approach to their work combined with an ability to work under pressure within time constraints.

Working hours are 37 per week.

Salary  –  £45,000 depending on experience
