The role

An exciting opportunity has arisen at our site at St. Peters, Newcastle upon Tyne for two Design & Applications Engineers to join our growing business. These positions will be on a full time, permanent basis.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Design & Applications Engineer is responsible for the entire design product life cycle from sales to service. They will design and develop BEL Valves products as determined by business development, marketing strategy and customer requirements in accordance with design standards laid down both nationally and internationally. They will be responsible for on time delivery of all engineering documents and for reviewing and executing non-conformances.

Duties will include

  • To design valves, actuators and associated engineered test equipment
  • To give design and engineering support for operations, research and development (R&D) and commercial activities
  • To obtain technical sign-off for engineering related documentation, procedures and reports during product design reviews
  • To present designs to the Technical Director & Engineering Manager for review and sign off
  • To ensure on time delivery of all engineering documentation
  • To produce information required for other departments and customers to meet delivery dates
  • To ensure designs are in line with as sold cost requirements
  • To incorporate any agreed changes into new work and designs or Knowledgebase via feedback from other business area
  • To ensure optimisation of design as and when required using finite element analysis
  • To conduct troubleshooting of test failures and determining root cause
  • To review assigned order packages/specifications and identify technical requirements
  • To attend meetings with customers to discuss and agree technical requirements
  • To liaise with customer representatives through site visits, discussions at site or through email, telephone or teleconference
  • To efficiently deal with customer enquiries via the presentation of drawings, specifications, procedures and manuals
  • To continuously develop the contribution of BEL India to better support the business
  • To contribute to use and development of IFS
  • Be familiar with the requirements of various Standards such as ISO9000 and Industry standards as given by ASME, ANSI, API etc
  • To participate in personnel development ensuring the Performance Management & Development process (PMD) is well supported
  • To adopt knowledge sharing approaches and where appropriate coach or train colleagues
  • To contribute to the valve design process; working in continuous improvement project teams to optimise valve designs, including standardisation and the knowledge base
  • To work in a safe manner; driving positive behaviour and leading by example with regard to the company’s health, safety and environmental policies
  • To carry out any other duties not listed above as may reasonably be expected

The person

The successful candidates must be educated to degree level in mechanical engineering or in a similar discipline with a minimum of 2 years design experience. Applicants will have experience of assembly and test and/or machining of components and will be able to use Creo/Windchill or a similar CAD system. Experience of creating bill of materials (BOM’s), detail drawings and general arrangement (GA) are required. The use of finite element analysis (FEA) and/or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is also desirable as well as the use of IFS or a business system.

Applicants must be able to interact with internal / external customers, suppliers and service providers. They must be able to be complete detailed problem solving activities and be able to prioritise tasks effectively using operational tools. They will be able to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability work independently on small projects and as part of a team on larger projects.

Working hours are 35 per week.

The successful candidates will receive a ‘new starter’ payment of £375.00 after 6 continuous months of employment and a further £375.00 after 12 continuous months (payment is subject to the terms and conditions of the scheme).
