External / Internal Senior Sales Engineer

BEL Valves offers design, manufacture, testing and aftermarket care of high integrity valves and actuators to critical offshore and onshore projects, within the oil and gas, power and renewables sectors.

Core activities are managed from the head office in Newcastle upon Tyne, with international projects supported from a local and satellite network.

The role

An exciting opportunity has arisen at our site at St. Peters, Newcastle upon Tyne for an External / Internal Senior Sales Engineer to join our growing business. This position will be on a full time, permanent basis.

Reporting to the Sales Director, the External / Internal Senior Sales Engineer will implement the regional sales strategy within the assigned territories to deliver profitable order awards. They will ensure these are aligned to overall business objectives. They will also prepare proposals in a timely, professional and competitive manner to client and statutory requirements.

Duties will include

  • To ensure that the proposals are prepared on time and in accordance with the requirements of customer specifications and statutory requirements
  • To estimate costs for all BEL Valves products and services utilising available costing calculators and, where necessary
  • To endeavour to optimise proposals by challenging costs, manufacturing hours and valve design through consultation with the value engineering manager, applications and/or project quality department
  • To liaise with purchasing department when deemed necessary to validate materials / bought in component costs
  • To consult with engineering resources to ensure technical information and supporting documents are formulated wherever necessary for proposals and order award
  • To liaise with planning to determine the best possible lead time for manufacture
  • To ensure proposals are based upon approved contractual and commercial terms acceptable to BEL Valves
  • To maintain accurate quotation and communication records at all times
  • To ensure all orders received are reviewed, approved, acknowledged, entered into the business system and transferred into the business with clarity and in a timely manner

External Sales

  • In conjunction with the Sales Director, develop and implement a strategic plan for the territories assigned
  • To regularly visit the territories to build relationships with customers and agents and promote the BEL Valves brand and products
  • To understand, promote and maintain existing profitable business streams whilst developing new customer base
  • To develop, train, motivate and maintain an effective agency network in the territories
  • In conjunction with the Sales Director , prepare a monthly rolling forecast of likely order intake opportunities
  • To develop and nurture key account relationships
  • To understand the competitive landscape within the territories and to ensure bids are competitively positioned through key activities such as meetings, actions and opportunities from the territory
  • To participate in and provide market direction to the business development programme where opportunities are identified within the territories
  • To monitor and feedback information relating to the activities of competitors including market price benchmarking
  • To carry out any other duties not listed above as may reasonably be expected
  • To work in a safe manner; driving positive behaviour and leading by example with regard to British Engines Group health, safety and environmental policies

The person

The successful candidate must be educated to degree level in an engineering discipline. They must also have at least 4 years’ of external sales and international external sales experience, as well as a proven track record of sales negotiation and successful awards. It is also essential that the successful candidate has 5 years’ experience of valve manufacturing, specification and valve design experience.

Knowledge of the upstream oil and gas industry are essential as is experience of setting and planning international strategic programmes

The successful applicant must be able to be complete detailed problem solving activities and be able to prioritise tasks effectively. They will be able to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability work independently on small projects and as part of a team on larger projects.


Working hours are 35 per week.
