The role

 An exciting opportunity has arisen at our site in South Shields for a Quality Control Engineer at our Simonside factory in South Shields.  This position will be on a full time, permanent basis.

The successful applicant will work within the quality team with primary responsibility for the approval and release of the products. They will also work with the Quality Technicians and Operators to ensure inspection and testing activities are conducted correctly.

Duties will include

  • To coordinate and perform quality control activities and business improvement initiatives
  • To authorisation and release of product for delivery, including preparation of loose items
  • To support operations with in-process and final inspection and testing of product and assemblies
  • Disposition and control of non-conforming product
  • To carry out customer eyes overcheck of product before delivery
  • To prepare and maintain inspection and test records
  • To work with quality technicians and operators to ensure inspection and testing activities are conducted correctly
  • To host outside inspection visits by the customers QAR and classification society surveyors
  • To visit suppliers and perform product verification activities
  • To assist with the development and competence assessment of OPC operatives
  • To perform product and process audits as identified by quality assurance
  • To perform defect cause investigations and contribute toward corrective action via the CAPA system
  • To assure that inspection and test equipment is controlled and used as defined by quality assurance
  • To assist development and maintenance of NDT methods and qualifications necessary to assure product quality and satisfy customers’ specifications
  • To deputise for colleagues and undertake related tasks

The person

The successful candidate must hold a recognised mechanical engineering qualification (ideally HNC or above) with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in quality control or product inspection. They must also have the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, quality plans and specifications.

Experience of metrology and non-destructive testing quality controls are essential, along with being computer literate, with experience of ERP systems and competent with software such as Microsoft Word and Excel. A Level 2 qualification in non-destructive testing (Ultrasonic or Dye Penetrant) is also desirable.

The candidate must be skilled in the use of inspection and test equipment and be capable of being trained to use all equipment owned by the company.

They must have strong attention to detail and a ‘customer-first’ attitude together with the ability to liaise with customer representatives and communicate effectively. It is also essential that they are able to multi-task and prioritise work effectively in order to meet business needs. The ability to make logical and rapid decisions and be capable of co-ordinating people are also a must.

The successful candidate will work within a team focused environment and must demonstrate a flexible approach towards supporting colleagues within both the immediate and wider team.

Hours of work are 37 hours per week, however the successful candidate must have a flexible approach to working hours as there may be a requirement to travel.

A current driving licence is essential.
