Stephenson Gobin, part of the British Engines Group, has two product brands; SG Transmission and Geofire. Both brands design and manufacture innovative electromagnetic products.  SG Transmission develops bespoke clutches and brakes for customers throughout the world. Applications for these products require high precision engineering; they include medical equipment and military machinery. An opportunity has arisen for a Quality Technician to join the existing operations team on site at Stephenson Gobin in Bishop Auckland.

The role

Reporting to the Research and Development (R&D) Manager the successful candidate will be responsible for delivering front line monitoring and control of the quality of parts made in house and purchased, to ensure that customer expectations are achieved. You will ensure that the actions required to maintain product quality are identified, communicated to and applied by all relevant areas of the business; championing a culture of corrective action and continuous improvement.

Duties will include

  • To collate and analyse data for internal and external non conformance reports (NCRs) to drive improvement activity (preventive and corrective action)
  • To lead timely and effective 8D corrective action and root cause analysis, when non-conformances are identified
  • To liaise with external suppliers regarding non-conformances ensuring corrective actions are effectively implemented
  • To conduct final inspection of in-house machined parts and carry out patrol inspection
  • To conduct internal auditing of processes and assisting with external auditing of suppliers
  • To assist the R&D Manager with process failure mode effect analysis (PFMEA) and process capability analysis
  • To perform qualification inspection of new subcontracted parts or suppliers
  • To develop inspection methods and equipment which are efficient and fit for purpose
  • To supervise calibration activities to ensure all equipment is maintained to the standard required
  • To verify finished product for release approval and to issue certificates of conformity (CoC)
  • To provide and assist with training and development of operators and apprentices when appropriate

The person

The succesful candidate will:

  • Have experience of working in an engineering/manufacturing environment in an inspection or quality role
  • Be able to interpret engineering drawings
  • Have experience in using a large variety of measuring equipment including CMM
  • Have experience of ISO9001
  • Experience of IATF 16949 would be an advantage
  • A knowledge of statistical quality control techniques would be an advantage
  • Have the ability to generate and collate good quality cohesive reports and documentation
  • Be passionate, proactive and possess a positive attitude to problem solving
  • Have the ability to motivate and coach employees towards maintaining high standards in their work
  • Be flexible with a hands on approach to work activities
  • Possess good verbal and written communication skills
  • Be able to work well under pressure and manage time effectively
  • Be proactive and decisive
  • Be IT literate
  • Be time served (or possess other equivalent qualifications) alternatively with a proven work history within quality
