Each year we celebrate the achievements of our apprentices, those apprentices in their final year, and also employees from across the group who have been with the company for 25 years.
In preparation we took a look back at what happened 25 years ago, during the year 1994 when our long serving employees were starting their careers with British Engines…
February 1994: Art thieves snatch the famous painting ‘Scream’ from a Norwegian gallery. It takes them just 50 seconds to climb a ladder, smash a window and cut the artwork from the wall with wire cutters.
April 1994: The Women’s Royal Airforce fully merges into the Royal Air Force.
May 1994: The Channel Tunnel is officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II and the French president, François Mitterrand.
May 1994: Nelson Mandela becomes president of South Africa.
May 1994: Four Weddings and a Funeral is released.
July 1994: PJ and Duncan get ready to ‘rhumble’! Ant and Dec release their third single, ‘Let’s Get Ready to Rhumble’; reaching number nine in the official charts.
July 1994: Tony Blair is elected as Labour Party leader.
September 1994: German supermarket Lidl opens its first 10 stores in Britain.
September 1994: The first episode of Friends airs in America.
September 1994: Pulp Fiction is released, proving a massive box office hit.
October 1994: Forrest Gump comes to cinemas in the UK.
November 1994: The first episode of The Vicar of Dibley broadcasts on BBC1.
November 1994: The first National Lottery draw is held. A £1 ticket gives a one-in-14-million chance of correctly guessing the winning numbers. Today a £2 ticket gives a one-in-45-million chance.
November 1994: The Daily Telegraph becomes the first national newspaper in Britain to launch an online edition.
December 1994: Sony releases its first PlayStation.
1994: Oasis debuts with their first album ‘Definitely Maybe,’ and Blur releases their third album ‘Parklife.’
